A real capo does not let his people rot behind bars. On the Jail page (tab Behind bars) you press "Break out" to spring a fellow inmate: another player or one of the notorious NPC crooks who are always locked up there. If it works, you take the credit and the respect. If it fails, you might end up in a cell yourself. Below you can read exactly how the success chance is calculated, what a jailbreak earns you and how you keep getting better at it.

How a jailbreak works

  • Choose a target: every inmate has their own success chance, mainly depending on how long they still have to serve.
  • Make an attempt: you start the break; the outcome is rolled immediately.
  • Cooldown: there is a short cooldown between two attempts, so endless spamming is not an option.

Calculating the success chance

Your success chance is the sum of a time base and a personal bonus, always capped between 5% and 95%: that ceiling is absolute, a guaranteed break does not exist.

The time base

The most important factor is how long the inmate still has to serve. Right before release the time base is around 58% by default, and it drops by about 4.5% per remaining minute, down to a low floor for long, heavily guarded sentences (all values adjustable). Someone who is almost free is easy to spring; breaking out a fresh sentence is extremely dangerous.

Your personal bonus

  • Skill (max +35%): grows with your successful jailbreaks and your strength (power), with diminishing returns: the first steps count the most.
  • Respect bonus (max +18%): the more standing you have, the more easily the guards look the other way.

An experienced breaker with a lot of respect therefore easily hits the 95% ceiling on targets who are almost free.

Rewards for success

  • +0.5 respect per freed inmate (default): a steady way to build your standing.
  • XP and season points: every successful break counts toward the current season.
  • A successful co-op rescue of a fellow player also gives you cash and XP from a variable range (no longer a fixed amount): see below.
  • Chance of a tuning part: sometimes something valuable drops out of the break.
  • Progress for achievements, daily tasks, weekly challenges and tournaments.
  • Break out a fellow player and it makes the news: free publicity for your reputation.

Your successful breaks also count on the Top breakers tab: the best jailbreakers of the day.

The risk of failure

A jailbreak is a gamble with stakes. If the attempt fails, there is a catch chance that you get arrested yourself and end up behind bars: and that catch chance goes up the lower your success chance was. A desperate break at a 10% success chance is therefore doubly dangerous: either you fail, or you are about to be sitting in there yourself. Aim for inmates who are almost free, so you keep the risk low and build up skill safely.

Co-op rescue: free your friend

Besides the regular break there is the targeted rescue of a real player: the way to get a friend or family member back on the street. It works slightly differently:

  • The rescue is free: purely chance-based, just like breaking out an NPC. No more upfront bribe.
  • Success chance = an adjustable base + your jailbreak skill - heavier guarding the longer your friend still has to serve.
  • Blood frees blood: if you share the same family, you get a sizeable bonus (+15% by default).
  • Reward for success: cash and XP are both rolled from a range instead of a fixed amount: by default cash between roughly €8,000 and €50,000, and XP between 6 and about 10, random within that margin each time. No two rescues are exactly the same.
  • The rescue has its own cooldown (5 minutes by default), separate from the regular jailbreak cooldown.
  • Anti multi-account: linked accounts cannot free each other.

Locked up yourself?

If you are behind bars yourself, you cannot break anyone out: but you can escape yourself, directly from the cell screen on any page. That is a separate gamble with its own formula and a penalty if it fails; read all about it in Jail: serve your time or break out.

Tips for more successful jailbreaks

  • Focus on targets who are almost free: that is where the time base is highest and the catch chance on failure lowest.
  • Keep breaking people out consistently: every successful break raises your skill bonus for good.
  • Work on your power at the Gym and on your respect: both add up on every break.
  • Plan your attempts around active daily tasks, weekly challenges and tournaments for double the gain.
  • Free family members with the rescue: the family bonus makes the difference, and a teammate on the street is worth more than a bribe.

Extra jailbreak chance through Street Favors

Your respect already counts toward your jailbreak chance. On top of that, the favor The Bondsman on the Street Favors page gives you a temporary 15% extra jailbreak chance. You will find the page in the left menu under My Empire.

Frequently asked questions

How is my success chance calculated?

Time base (by default ~58% right before release, dropping by ~4.5% per remaining minute) plus your personal bonus from skill (max +35%) and respect (max +18%), always capped between 5% and 95%.

What is the maximum success chance?

95%, no exceptions. Even the best breaker always keeps some residual risk: the underworld has no certainties.

What does a successful jailbreak earn?

By default +0.5 respect, XP and season points, a chance of a tuning part, and progress for achievements, daily tasks, weekly challenges and tournaments.

What happens if a jailbreak fails?

There is a catch chance that you end up in a cell yourself: and it is higher the lower your success chance was. So only take low-odds attempts if you can handle the risk.

What is the difference with the co-op rescue?

The rescue is a targeted, free release of a real player with its own formula, its own cooldown and a family bonus of +15% by default if you share the same family. The reward for success (cash and XP) is a variable range instead of a fixed amount.
