Battle damage calculations

Hello my fellow Admin, I would like to know how the combat system works since as or now the game only rewards Power but no defence making it hard to focus on defence just with the gym, is it Higher Power number > lower defence number and lower power number < higher defence number ? If this is the case then a review has to be done to balance those rewards that are only giving Power .
